Trans World Airlines (TWA) was founded in 1930 as Transcontinental & Western Airlines. In 1938, billionaire Howard Hughes bought a controlling interest in the airline and greatly expanded it, ordering the first production run of the advanced Lockheed Constellation after WWII. TWA soon became the second unofficial U.S. flag carrier, competing directly with Pan Am on domestic routes. In 2001 it merged with American Airlines. This poster depicts a TWA Douglas DC-3 at Grand Central Airport, Los Angeles, in the 1930s.
